Expert Varicose Vein Specialist
We offer specialist treatment of varicose veins and venous reflux using the latest technology. This in-room procedure is performed by a qualified surgeon and involves radio-frequency ablation, a modern alternative to traditional vein stripping. The technique is minimally invasive and clinically proven to be safe and effective, offering patients a more comfortable recovery and improved outcomes.
The Treatment

Endovenous Radio Frequency Ablation (EVRF)
The mainstay of our practice is radiofrequency ablation (RFA). Radio-frequency ablation is a minimally invasive out-patient procedure, performed under local anaesthetic with ultrasound-guidance. The diseased vein is treated by passing a thin catheter up the vein. Local anaesthetic solution is placed around the vein with a thin needle. The vein is then ablated (closed off) in segments by the application of heat energy. Venous ulcers are treated by combining surgical treatment and wound care in collaboration with experienced wound care sisters.

Spider Veins
Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to eliminate varicose veins and spider veins. Sclerotherapy involves an injection of a solution directly into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to collapse and stick together and the blood to clot. Over time, the vessel turns into scar tissue that fades from view.

Your consultation
Your journey to wellness begins with your consultation, tailored to your preference. Our experienced team will be there to guide you, step by step.

Varicose veins
Varicose veins are enlarged, tortuous, bulging blood vessels that are usually the result of underlying venous reflux disease. Varicose veins can be treated with radio-frequency ablation (RFA), Venaseal™, foam sclerotherapy and micro-phlebectomy.

Spider veins
Spider veins are small, dilated, tortuous blood vessels.

Venous Ulcers
Venous Ulcers are the most severe manifestation of chronic venous reflux disease. Venous ulcers are treated by a combination of compression dressings, RFA and comprehensive wound care. Dr Steyn makes use of the services of a number of wound care sisters for the treatment of venous ulcers.
Vein care process

Before procedure
Before the procedure, please arrange transport, as a mild sedative will be administered and driving is not permitted for 12 hours afterward. You will be given a sedative tablet before the procedure. Ensure that you eat a light meal no later than two hours before the appointment. A gown will be provided, but please wear bikini- or speedo-style underwear to allow easy access to the groin area for the ultrasound probe.

During prosedure
During the procedure, please arrive at our rooms 15–20 minutes beforehand to register and take the sedative tablet. You will then change into a gown, keeping your underwear and shirt on. A quick ultrasound reassessment will be performed, followed by cleaning and draping of the procedure area. The procedure itself takes approximately one hour. Once completed, your leg will be wrapped with a bandage.

After prosudure
After the procedure, keep the bandage on for 72 hours unless otherwise advised by the surgeon. You may remove the small dressing at the puncture site after three days. Avoid submerging the leg in water, such as bathing or swimming, for one week—showering is recommended instead. Aim to walk for 30 minutes each day, but avoid vigorous exercise such as running, cycling, or gym workouts for one week. If you plan to fly or travel long distances within two months, please inform the surgeon before the procedure. Driving is permitted 12 hours afterward at your own discretion. Bruising, soreness, and a feeling of tightness are normal and may persist for 2–3 weeks. A follow-up appointment is scheduled for eight weeks after the procedure, which is the optimal time to assess results. Earlier follow-ups can be arranged if needed.
